Celebrate Wetlands Month – May 2002.  American Wetlands Month, an opportunity to conserve wetlands and help educate others about their importance, will be held in May.  Join thousands of Americans in celebrating the uniqueness, beauty, and importance of wetlands.  Projects range from one-day events with minimal planning to long-term programs.  American Wetlands Month is part of the Izaak Walton League's American Wetlands Campaign, which includes workshops, conferences, publications and technical and networking assistance to local communities.  The Izaak Walton League offers an on-line calendar of activities for American Wetlands Month.  To access the activities calendar, to obtain project ideas from American Wetlands Month, and for more information about the Izaak Walton League's American Wetlands Campaign, visit http://www.iwla.org/sos/awm.

 

11-18 National River Cleanup WeekMay 11 – 18, 2002, all States and Cities.  Sponsored by America Outdoors, USDA Forest Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, American Whitewater, American Rivers.  National River Cleanup Week traditionally occurs during the second or third week of May each year.  It was originally conceived in 1991 by America Outdoors in response to a recognition that America's streams and rivers were in need of cleaning due to the careless disposal of trash and other debris.  Anyone interested in organizing a cleanup effort in their area are encouraged to register, either online or via the phone.  Registering for a cleanup is free.  For more information, visit www.americaoutdoors.org/nrcw or call 865-558-3595.

 

15 Watershed and Site Planning Training Workshop – May 15 & May 23, 2002, Adams County, PA.  The Chesapeake Bay Program is sponsoring three workshops (with the Center for Watershed Protection) to help communities implement better site designs and conduct watershed planning. As part of the workshop, a review of the local code and ordinances will be conducted to compare them with the Model Development Principles that promote environmentally sensitive design practices.  There is a $30 registration fee that covers workshop materials and lunch for both days.  To request a brochure or for additional information, contact Menchu Martinez at 410-267-5704 or email martinez.menchu-c@epa.gov. 

 

16 Project WET Workshop at Little Pine State Park – May 16, 2002, Little Pine State Park, Waterville, PA, 9:00 am - 3:30 pm  Little Pine State Park will be holding a Project WET curriculum workshop for educators teaching at grade levels K - 4.  Teachers from I.U. 17 and I.U. 9 will be given preference for registration.  Registration will be limited to 25 participants, with a minimum of 15 to hold the event.  Registration will open on April 1, 2002.  This is a one-day workshop, which will provide 6 hours of continuing education training for Act 48.  All materials are provided.  Morning coffee will be provided, but participants should bring a bag lunch.  For more information, call the park office at 570-753-6000, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm or email littlepinesp@state.pa.us.

17-21 River Network River Rally 2002 – May 17 - 21, 2002, Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort, Asheville, NC. 18 Wildflower Workshop for EducatorsMay 18, 2002, R.B. Winter State Park, Mifflinburg, PA, 9 am - 3 pm.  Wildflowers are in their peak bloom in the forest in late spring.  Learn about these ephemeral beauties that bloom and disappear before the summer even begins.  Identification using field guides, wildflower ecology, native and non-native species, and using plants as tools for teaching will be included in this workshop.  This is a great opportunity for school teachers, home school educators, Audubon groups, youth and daycare leaders, and other interested adults to get to know more about Pennsylvania flora!  For pre-registration (required) or for more information call 570-966-1455 or email rbwintersp@state.pa.us.

 

18 Swamp and Wetland Ecology WorkshopMay 18, June 13, June 27, 2002, Pymatuning State Park, Jamestown, PA, 8 am - 4 pm.  This Act 48-eligible program will introduce and train teachers in wetland delineation, wetland soil, and plants.  Participation by students in grades 6-12 provides the teacher with an opportunity to meet several of the environment and ecology standards, science, and reading.  Wetland education involves students in classroom and field research, hands-on investigations, and stewardship.  Teachers will participate in hands-on activities and receive the Wonders of Wetlands educator guide, wetland posters, and numerous handouts.  The workshop will focus on wetlands around Pymatuning State Park and a portion will be spent at Hartstown swamp speaking with representatives of the PA Game Commission.  For more information, call 724-932-3141 or email pymatuningsp@state.pa.us.

 

18 8th Annual Pinchot Park Lake Festival & Craft Show – May 18, Quaker Race Day Use Area, Gifford Pinchot State Park, 9 am to Dusk.  The activities at the festival include: Children’s Fishing Derby & Casting Contest; Live Entertainment All Day; Craft Show; Puppet Show; Hot Air Balloon Launch; Fireworks; and Fun For The Whole Family!  This event benefits the Pinchot Park Interest Group and proceeds will be used for playground and recreation facility improvements in Pinchot Park.  For more information call 717-764-1155 or 717-432-5011.

 

20-23 3rd National Water Monitoring ConferenceMay 20-23, 2002, Madison, WI.  This event will be held on the banks of beautiful Lake Monona and is entitled, "Water Quality Monitoring 2002: Building a Framework for the Future."  This meeting will provide participants with opportunities for sharing successes, discussing issues, networking with colleagues, and bringing new and innovative ideas back to their own programs.  The conference agenda will include plenary speakers, paper presentations, panel discussions, interactive workshops, posters, exhibits, field trips, and facilitated discussion sessions.  This will be a working conference where all participants will play a key role in identifying the issues and collective steps we need to take to build a water monitoring framework for the future!  If you would like to submit an abstract or for more information, visit www.nwqmc.org.

13-14 Citizens’ Volunteer Monitoring Workshops: “Planning for Success”

Aug. 13-14, 2002                Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA (Train-the-Trainer for Service Providers)

The goal of these workshops is to build capacity in citizen monitors to ask the right questions about why they are monitoring, who will be using their data, how they will relate information gained, and how to use the data to make decisions.  These workshops are geared to be interactive indoor sessions where participants will work in small groups to learn from each other through feedback and role play.  For more information on the workshops, please contact Lesley Moore at 888-549-7640 or lesley.moore@canaanvi.org
